Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence

Speaker: Esther Perel

Track: Conscious Couples

Date / Time: Tue, Mar 31, 2009 - 1:00 pm to 2:15 pm Eastern Time

Why does great sex so often fade for couples who claim to love each other as much as ever?

Can we want what we already have?

Why does the transition to parenthood so often spell erotic disaster?

Why does good intimacy not guarantee great sex?

Why is the forbidden so erotic?

Based on the international bestseller: 'Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence' now available in 25 languages, this bold, provocative new take on intimacy and sex shakes up traditional thinking about keeping desire alive in a long-term relationship. We will probe the ambiguities of love and desire, and explore ways to balance our need for security and closeness with our quest for separateness and passion.

In more than twenty years of clinical experience, I have treated hundreds of couples whose domestic lives are empty of passion. They describe relationships that are open and loving, yet sexually dull. Contrary to popular belief, sexual problems are not always the result of relational problems, and improving the emotional relationship may do little to improve the sex. I will discuss the tension between the erotic and the domestic, explain how you might have more exciting, playful, even poetic sex, in short, what is takes to bring lust home,

We'll explore the cultural pressures that shape domesticated sex how our obsession with frequency leads to an over-focus on performance, often at the cost of eroticism and well discover an erotic landscape that is far richer than any repertoire of sexual techniques.

In an atmosphere free of judgment, we will learn to unlock our erotic intelligence as we learn to:

- Understand how our emotional history has shaped our erotic blueprints

- Recognize why more intimacy can lead to less sex

- Cultivate eroticism, playfulness in and out of the bedroom, and create a sense of mystery between partners

- Unlock erotic blocks and bring the x back to sex

- Keep desire alive after kids are born

- Want what we already have
